Middle School Technology Use: Guidelines
In the Middle School, we believe that technology is a tool that exists to support the AIS mission and vision and help students to achieve the ESLRs by facilitating innovation, communication, and collaboration. We believe that technology enriches and enhances student learning and will prepare our students to function effectively in the digital 21st century. As such students must apply ethical guidelines associated with the use of technology. The following outlines expectations for student behaviors in the Middle School at AIS as related to digital devices and the internet.
RESPECT Yourself.I will show respect for myself through my actions. I will select online names that are appropriate. I will consider the information and images that I post online. I will consider what personal information about my life, experiences, experimentation or relationships I post.

RESPECT Others.I will show respect to others. I will not use electronic mediums to flame, bully, or stalk other people. I will not take and use photos or videos of teachers or peers without their consent. I will show respect for other people and myself in my choice of websites, I will not visit sites that are degrading to others, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. I will not abuse my rights of access and I will not enter other people's private spaces or areas.

RESPECT for Property.I will respect the property of others including school IT property such as networks, hardware, software, or other user’s files and data. This includes, but is not limited to, the creation, uploading, or downloading of computer viruses or other malicious software. I will be respectful of other’s devices and be careful not to damage them. Should I notice something broken or another student not acting responsibly, I will notify a teacher immediately.

RESPECT Intellectual Property.I will suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, photos and other media. I will only use software and media others produce with their permission. I will use free and open source alternatives rather than pirating software. I will purchase, license and register all software. I will purchase my music and media, and refrain from distributing these in a manner that violates their licenses. I will act with integrity. I will not download for personal use at school.

PROTECT Yourself.I will ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contact details or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me. I will protect passwords, accounts and resources.

PROTECT Others.I will protect others by reporting abuse and by not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications. I will protect myself and others by not using cellular data (3G/4G) and personal hotspots on campus without prior permission.

RESPONSIBLE Learner.
I will demonstrate responsibility when using technology. This includes being respectful as defined above, but also following teacher directions, taking care of my devices and respecting others’ property. This includes, but is not limited to, making sure my device is charged, not leaving it on the playground or in a classroom, not eating/drinking near devices, not multitasking during class, using only my designated accounts, and not gaming or using social media during class time.
NOTE: American International School has full access to all systems for monitoring purposes.
